The University Grants Commission (UGC) has proposed significant changes in the criteria for colleges to receive grants from the Centre through draft guidelines titled 'UGC (Fitness of Colleges for Receiving Grants) Rules, 2024'. These rules are set to replace the existing 1975 UGC guidelines. The revision aims to align with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and ensure higher education institutions meet specific quality standards. The new draft rules expand grant eligibility criteria beyond the previous focus on course offerings and duration. Under the proposed guidelines, colleges affiliated with universities established under central or state acts must be listed under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. This listing ensures that statutory rules are enforced uniformly across colleges and holds them accountable to the UGC. Stakeholders have been invited to provide feedback on the draft guidelines before March 4, 2024, by emailing suggestions.collegesregulation@gmail.com.
