After post-graduation from Bombay University, I shifted to Amritsar. I had always been fond of gaining knowledge about current topics and I also loved to simplify teaching complicated topics of English Grammar and Mathematics, so it slowly dawned on me that it was the profession I should pursue. Thus my zest for education led me to start the group of 'Holy Heart Schools' in Amritsar, in 1978. My interesting journey as an educator began in 1970 in Mumbai , as a Mathematics teacher, which culminated in 1978 with the opening of Holy Heart Schools. It is over 45 years in Amritsar where I have worked with professional parents along with the first generation learners which included the business class, working class and farming families. Being a Mumbaikar, when I arrived in Amritsar, there were hardly any English medium schools . Realising the shortcomings the students of the city were facing which included lack of correct education, approach of teaching, guidance to students with their personal, social and emotional development, preparation to various competitions (curricular and co-curricular), I felt that I could take up the challenge and work for the holistic development of every child who came into my fold.

Located amongst a number of educational institutions, in the holy city of Amritsar, Holy Heart Presidency is one of the few ICSE schools remarked as the best by the ICSE inspection team. Being an ISO 9001: 2000 Certified institution, it is maintaining international standards and has implemented several advanced technologies in order to make it a 'True Futuristic School'. The School has also been awarded several times for its World-class infrastructure and note-worthy performances in academics. With the undying soul of a teacher that lies within me, I work round the clock to better the teaching skills of my teachers (guiding them about effective teaching strategies, class management, cooperative learning, productive temperament, brain based learning & study skills, story telling etc.), developing personality of my students (helping them possess higher order thinking skills like analytical, creative, problem solving, decision making etc.) and also helping parents understand the significance of right education for their wards' bright future by taking seminars on regular basis.

I would encourage schools to introduce conceptual learning which avoids students to mug up what they are being taught. While this will help students to understand the concepts better, they will also be able to retain and apply them better. While it is not humanly possible for a single teacher to pay attention to every student, schools must start looking at the use of technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Chatbot that can become the helping hand to the teachers as well as the students. To ensure that my organization is filled with leaders of leaders, I believe to be the leader who not only encourages leadership qualities but also paves the way.

To cultivate new leaders, I will lead them by example. I will let others make important decisions and show complete trust in them, for trust is the glue that binds people together. I believe that education is the birth right of every individual and with the same in mind, 'Amir Swaran School' was established to give quality education to the under privileged children, free of cost. Besides this our organisation supports 'Harbans Lal Bhalla trust' that operates with the goal of providing education and care for all children especially girls, Global Institute for Childhood Disability, People for the Ethical Treatment Of Animals, Leprosy Mission,India, Shubh Karya, Khatri Sabha, Lotus Kindergarten School etc. with the sole aim to bring about a positive change in society.

There should be a massive technology infrastructure for education. The changes initiated by New Education Policy (NEP) with regards to the importance of Vocational Skills are 'a must' for our society. The outdated models of brick and mortar schools and colleges now need to be replaced by the efficient educational delivery mechanisms that can actually take the wealth of human knowledge to the masses. Besides, there are many students who choose to study abroad. We, as educators, must work on our students and encourage them so that they choose to stay back in India, learn here and empower the country through their knowledge.

The capacity for leadership arises out of powerful learning experiences. Leadership for learning practice involves the sharing of leadership in which everyone is encouraged to take the lead as appropriate to task and context. The experience and expertise of staff, students and parents are drawn upon as resources as a leadership is never 'I' but 'We'.

It is great to influence people around but it also means to shoulder more responsibility than others. My message to everyone who is a part of this field is, 'You chose this profession for a reason. You value learning; you value helping others; you value students. So you should see your purpose in life: help students grow academically and socially and do good things for this world!’
