Australia has raised visa application fees for international students by 125% in a move aimed at enhancing the integrity of its migration system and managing overall migration levels. Effective July 1, fees have increased to A$1,600 ($1,067) per application from A$710. The international education sector, valued at A$48 billion annually and comprising 7% of total exports, is pivotal to Australia's economy. While the government asserts the fee hike will create a fairer and more manageable migration system, critics, including university leaders, argue it unfairly targets international students and could detrimentally impact Australia's lucrative education export industry. Australia's handling of migration and international student influxes is poised to be a central issue in the upcoming 2025 election.
