Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam announced the 'Pragyan Bharati Scheme' which provides free admission from Class 11 through post-graduation for nearly 95,000 underprivileged students in 349 colleges and universities. A total of Rs 68.44 crore was distributed for the first phase of the 2024-25 academic year. The scheme aims to promote higher education inclusivity by empowering students from poor and middle-class families. Previously, the income eligibility limit for free admission was increased to Rs 4 lakhs annually, and ration cards are now accepted as proof of family earnings. The scheme has benefitted over 22 lakh students with Rs 826.36 crore disbursed cumulatively until the last academic year. Further disbursements for subsequent payments and fee waivers are planned in September after document verification.
