Jawaharlal Nehru University is considering resuming its traditional in-house entrance exams for PhD admissions, potentially ending its reliance on the National Testing Agency. This reconsideration follows the recent cancellation of the UGC National Eligibility Test by the Indian government due to integrity concerns. JNU's Vice Chancellor, Santishree D. Pandit, confirmed the decision process will take about eight weeks, with stakeholder opinions being considered. Previously, JNU had adopted NET scores for PhD admissions per the National Education Policy 2020. However, the June 2024 NET cancellation has prompted JNU to reevaluate this approach. On July 3, discussions about reinstating JNU’s entrance exams began, a move supported by the JNU Teachers' Association, which has long criticized the NTA's computer-based tests used over the past three years.
