The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani Hyderabad has officially inaugurated its new Centre for Research Excellence in National Security (CRENS). This newly established centre aims to bolster the nation's security capabilities by focusing on Indigenous technology development through collaborative research, skill development, and entrepreneurship.

CRENS is designed to play a pivotal role in enhancing India's self-reliance in the national security sector. The centre will work in conjunction with major organizations such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), the tri-services, paramilitary forces, police, defense public sector undertakings (PSUs), and various industries. According to a statement from BITS Pilani, the initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the nation’s strategic and economic growth, fostering a secure and prosperous future.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr. G Satheesh Reddy, the former Secretary of Defence Research and Development (DD R&D), former Chairman of DRDO, and former Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister. Dr. Reddy highlighted the crucial need for developing new technologies to address asymmetric warfare, which is increasingly prevalent in today's global security landscape. He also emphasized the strategic advantage of CRENS being situated at the Hyderabad campus, allowing for close collaboration with numerous institutions of national significance in the region.

CRENS will focus on three strategic verticals. The first vertical is dedicated to offering hybrid courses, both online and offline, aimed at enhancing the skills of professionals in the national security field. The second vertical is centred on research to provide practical solutions for service personnel. The third vertical aims to foster innovation by supporting startups involved in defense, space, and other strategic sectors essential for the nation.

Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani, expressed pride in the establishment of the centre, noting the critical need for advanced research and innovation in national security. He stated, “National security research and innovation is a domain that requires much more emphasis, and we are very proud to have a dedicated centre here at BITS Pilani Hyderabad. By bringing together key stakeholders in the national security domain, CRENS aims to advance research, support innovation, and deliver the skills of professionals, making the country self-reliant in security science and technology.”
