Several private universities, including prominent ones like Manipal Academy, Amrita, Jain, Symbiosis, Amity, Azim Premji, and Christ University, have expressed interest in establishing campuses in a state after receiving invitations from the state government. Corporate-community managements running aided colleges are also preparing for expansion. The Department of Higher Education is formulating laws for this purpose, and the proposal is expected to be discussed in the next assembly session. The state government emphasizes social justice, and reservations in these colleges may differ from those in other states. The decision to establish private universities comes after the government rejected deemed status applications from institutions like Rajagiri and Mar Ivanious based on recommendations from the Shyam B Menon commission. If the bill is approved, retired vice-chancellors will likely be given the responsibility of running these new colleges, and operations are expected to begin within a year after land acquisitions.
