Manipal Institute of Technology has been selected as a nodal center for the Smart India Hackathon - Hardware edition, inaugurated by the Ministry of Education on December 19. A total of 47 higher educational institutes, including Manipal, have been designated as nodal centers for the event, where 24 teams with 179 participants will tackle four problem statements from the governments of Gujarat and Kerala and the Ministry of Ayush. The finale, scheduled from December 19 to 23, will see participants competing for a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for each problem statement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to interact with the students during the event, which involves over 12,000 participants and 2,500 mentors across the nation. Smart India Hackathon 2023 received 231 problem statements from 51 departments of 25 ministries, showcasing significant participation from various organizations. The hackathon, launched in 2017, includes software and hardware editions for higher education students, with the introduction of SIH-Junior for school students in 2022.
