institute that suits their needs. In the past decade schools of all rank have mushroomed all over the world. Both parents and students have plenty of choice and the most promising ones will almost always offer the best of syllabus, infrastructure and faculties. The deluge of information makes the choice all the more difficult. It is at this juncture where a good alumni association plays a vital role. Alumni relations have become a strategic asset for institutions to stand out in this highly competitive world.
Earlier alumni and their Alma Mater were separate entities. Local alumni chapters were just a mode to interact with fellow alumni. But with the advent of social media, and networking which has become the lifeline of sustainability , alumni relationship has taken a different flavour altogether. Now the educational institutions have started to harness the power of alumni through various platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn etc. by creating groups and profiles on them. Institutions have realised how a strong and a positive relationship with their alumni can benefit them socially, academically and professionally. A good and engaging Alumni network allows the school to benefit from the expertise and exposure by offering support to the students, the institution and each other. ”Alumni are the most loyal supporter and the best ambassador of an institution.” Talented alumni will have a wealth of experience and skills to share with the current students through talks and meets. They can offer career guidance and be mentors to present students which in turn will help them to have a competitive edge in today’s world. They could also play a significant role in contributing scholarships to deserving students. Leveraging the alumni community can always be a win-win situation to both. Most of them will be willing to ‘Give Back’ to the Alma Mater as a sign of gratitude and affinity towards the institution. Moreover an institution’s alumni are the reflection of its past, representation of the present and the link to its future. So every institution should invest money and time in nurturing a vibrant online community for their alumni and developing innovative ways to get them engaged constantly.
