Most certainly the school Principal has a much greater role in the student achievement than anticipated. Everything that is planned in the school is with a mission. It thus becomes imperative to have a mission that translates into vision and centres on student’s attainments with realistic goals and achievable targets.
There are many other factors that contribute to student development but among them leadership is the catalyst. Although the Principal’s leadership acumen focuses on student achievement but it is not solely confined to academic realm of devising strategies for integrated curricular practices, blended learning, inclusion of online tools into classroom deliveries, developing flipped classes for lucidity of concepts or for that matter merely planning co-scholastic, scholastic activities and assessments in the school.
It is leadership that intertwines a school around student’s progress. For an effective leadership, it is crucial to plan in those areas that were previously unthought-of while rationalizing student accomplishments. Therefore co-scholastic fields comprising of art, music, dance and sports; emotional development and support with care and compassion; weaving a student life around core values is one of the ways that imbibes value development and enhances a student’s critical decision making; opportunities of career development through career guidance workshop and seminars; community connect and alumni responsibility are the much deliberated cogs in the student’s development whose promoter and ally is the Principal of the school. Processes and school calendar are planned to create a happy quotient among students and to enable their optimal achievement. Hence it is the push and prods by the Principal leadership that expedites their empowerment and transformation into future ready and worldly wise individuals.
Gone are those days when the students feared talking to the Principal. This change in the perception has been brought about by the Principal’s willingness to reposition and align themselves as per the changing times; consequently Principals these days have become far more accessible, open and friendly. The students in present times can be seen sharing their concerns, queries and even their secrets with the Principal and this change has necessitated devising and implementation of strategies intended for students’ successful endeavours.
Therefore it can be concluded that the role of the school Principal is multi -dimensional. A Principal is a good resource manager, strong and motivated individual who clearly outlines expectations from students by being their counsellor, guide, mentor, reassuring, optimistic reachable and a compassionate person.
