This year on September 5, that is celebrated as the Teacher’s Day across the country, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind would be conferring 47 teachers finalised by the Education Ministry with highest teachers awards in the country. Every year the ceremony is held physically but this year due to pandemic outbreak, the ceremony would be conducted virtually. Teachers Day is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of Dr S Radhakrishnan.
This year, the Union Education Ministry on August 25 informed all the teachers who would be receiving the awards that the ceremony will be conducted virtually in view of the pandemic.
Another information was sent to the teachers on September 1, 2020, by the Education Ministry, It read, “It’s been decided to distribute award certificates and silver medals to awardee teachers through the respective district collectors/district commissioners on September 5, 2020.”
According to order present on the Ministry of Education’s website, an independent jury at national level reviewed the list of 153 teachers as shortlisted by all the 36 State and UT Selection Committees and 7 Organisation Selection Committees through video conferencing.
National Teachers Award 2020: Teachers request for a physical award ceremony
This year due to the awards being given away virtually 33 teachers have written to the President of India saying, “We respect your decision of taking precautionary measures considering the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Sir, we all are happy to get your blessings and wishes on the 5th of September Teachers’ Day through a webinar. But, we want to receive the award from your kind hands. We place our humble request to your Excellency the award ceremony may happen in future after the situation becomes favourable.”
The teachers do not wish to lose the one time opportunity of receiving the honour from the President and thus have requested for the ceremony to be rescheduled. The teachers also did not wish to leave the opportunity to communicate with the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and are ready to wait until the situation normalizes.
