According to some media reports, the Indian Government is also planning to reopen the schools in a phased manner from September 1 and November 14, 2020. However, some states are against the decision due to the safety of the students. Many other states like Delhi, Haryana and Karnataka are in support of the decision.
As the schools were closed from the last six months in the wake of the pandemic, they have adopted the system of online teaching through Zoom and other mobile applications.
Some state boards have cancelled their examinations and syllabus for the next academic year has been reduced by 30% to lessen the burden for the students.

School Reopening News in Delhi

Delhi government has released a  notice related to the reopening of schools in Delhi. As per the notice, the schools will remain shut till September  30.

  • Schools will remain closed till September 30. However, students of class 9 to 12 can go to school after September 21 on a voluntary basis to take guidance from their teachers in person. This may require written consent from the parents/guardians of the students.
  • All the teaching will be in online mode for this period. 
  • 50 per cent of the teaching and non-teaching staffs are allowed to come to schools from September 21.

All schools in Assam will remain closed till September 30.

Naveen Patnaik, Odisha Chief Minister announced that all educational institutions including schools in Odisha will remain shut till the end of Durga Puja vacation due to the prevailing COVID19 pandemic situation.

School Reopening News in Andhra Pradesh

As per New Indian Express reports, Adimulapu Suresh, Education Minister Andhra Pradesh said that the government will take a decision on reopening schools in the state on September 1.

Earlier, the state government decided to reopen the schools on September 4.

The principal secretary for education B Rajasekhar said “We will follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Once we get instructions from the MHA on August 31, when it will release guidelines for Unlock-4, a decision will be taken.”

Schools Reopening in Madhya Pradesh

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh stated that the decision to reopen the schools in the state will only be taken after further assessment of the student’s safety. 

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “Schools could not be opened yet due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools were not opened to not endanger the lives of children and save them from this disease. A decision on school reopening will only be taken after further assessment.”

A private school in Madhavgarh, Uttar Pradesh was found open, despite the fact that all the state government has directed all educational institutes to remain close.

Meghalaya has announced to reopen the schools from September 2020. With that, Meghalaya has become the first state to reopen the schools after the pandemic. 

Education Minister of Meghalaya, Lahkmen Rymbui said, “We’ve already formed a committee that has submitted a report on preparation of protocols for reopening of schools.

I’m very sure that if classes resume in Sept-Oct, session will extend till March-April next year and the course will be reduced accordingly,”

As per TOI reports, Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said “The staff of educational institutions must remain in their place of duty by September 1.

We will wait for the Union Home Ministry’s order for reopening of schools and we will issue the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) within 24 hours.”

On August 12, Wednesday, a state-run school in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district stared the classes defying the Govt guidelines.

Due to which, the headmaster received a notice from the Government. 

Hatsarberia BC Roy High School’s headmaster, Brindaban Ghatak, took the decision to re-open the school as studies of Class 10 students were getting affected.

School Reopening in Himachal Pradesh

An e-PTM has been organised in Himachal Pradesh from August 4 to 7 in which over 7.05 lakh parents have participated.

In this e-PTM, 62 per cent of parents opposed the reopening of schools in the state, while remaining parents wants the reopening with proper social distancing and other safety norms to be followed by the schools.

Only yoga centres and gyms are allowed to operate as per the guidelines of Unlock 3.0.

Besides, market complexes and malls are permitted to operate under “Mission Begin Again”. 

However, the lockdown is extended till August 31 as per which all schools, educational institutes and colleges are remain closed. The final decision of the school reopening date will be announced by September 5, 2020.

School Reopening in Tripura

Tripura government decided to start neighborhood classes from August 18 with a teacher-student ratio of 1:5 as most of the students are unable to get access to ongoing online classes.

According to the latest survey, it has been encountered that a total of 29% of students don’t have access to internet connectivity or mobile phones.

Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said, “Since these students can’t get access to ongoing classes, we have decided to start neighborhood classes from August 18 with a 1:5 teacher-student ratio.”

Andhra Pradesh government earlier said that the school might open from September 5, 2020, if the situation normalises. As per the reports, it will be initiated for Classes 10 and 12 followed by Classes 6 to 9.

Some states have submitted their dates for the reopening of the schools.

The decision also depends on the final unlock guidelines to be issued by the central government by the end of this month.

However, the states will have the final authority to decide whether they want to reopen the schools or not.

Social distancing will be strictly followed in the schools. 

  • Only 33% of students, teachers and other staff will be present in the school in one shift. 
  • Classes with a higher number of students will get split into two separate classes.

The schools will not operate for straight 6 to 8 hours. Instead, it will open in two shifts of 3 hours each. 

  • First shift will be from 8 to 11 am. 
  • The second shift will be from 12 to 3 pm.
  • All the classrooms will be properly sanitised in between classes.
