Students, requesting anonymity, said they did not go to school since no one else was coming. Parents on the other hand told teachers that they were not sending children due to fear of contracting Covid-19. The drop was witnessed a day after the UT education department asked principals and heads of all government schools to motivate parents to send their wards to schools.
In a message sent to principals, the education department had stated that “As you all have done required preparations keeping in view SOPs issued by the Government of India, so now, effort and cooperation is required from you to sensitise and motivate parents to send their wards to schools as per the staggered time table. Those who all had earlier given their consent must be motivated.”
Teachers said, “We have not given consent to send our own children to school and how can the department expect us to persuade parents to send their children to school?”
