HighSelf -Esteem in Children leads to better learning.
The Human mind works with the three components for better learning- cognitive, affective and motivation. The Cognitive comprises thinking process like, reasoning, memory, justification. Affective deals with emotions and motivation includes basic survival instincts like hunger, thirst, reproduction.
For children to have better learning, they need to be effectively academically engaged where high Self Esteem plays an important role. Self-esteem is related to the positive or negative perception of a student’s self-worth which affects a child ability and capability to learn. There are much empirical research linking high self esteem to better learning of children.
There are 4 components that define the esteem for anyone: self-confidence, identity, feeling of belonging, and feeling of competence. As the school, it is imperative that we need to provide a conducive environment which cultivates /develops high Self Esteem which helps them to grow into confident and well-adjusted adults with positive outlook on life and a sense of self-worth.
Here are some tips for helping children develop high self-esteem.
1. Encourage Positive Self-Talk. It is important to encourage children to talk positively to themselves. Whenever your child feels down, remind them to think positively and use affirmations such as “I am capable and strong” or “I can do anything I set my mind to.”
2. Praise Them. Praise is an important part of building children’s self-esteem. Instead of focusing on the negative, focus on the positive aspects of your child and praise them for their successes.
3. Teach Problem-Solving. Teaching children problem-solving skills helps them to be independent and feel capable of managing difficult situations. Encourage them to consider different solutions and strategies when faced with problems.
4. Set Goals. Setting goals and working towards them helps children to feel a sense of accomplishment. Help them to set both short-term and long-term goals and provide support and guidance as they work towards them.
5. Foster Independence. Encouraging children to be independent and take responsibility for their actions helps them to feel capable and builds their self-esteem.
6. Show Respect. Showing children respect and treating them with kindness helps them to feel valued and respected. Respect their opinions and decisions, and be understanding of their mistakes.
7. Allow for Mistakes: Everyone makes mistakes, and it’s important to teach children that mistakes are a part of life. Instead of focusing on the mistake, emphasize the process of learning from the mistake and how they can be better next time.
8. Provide Opportunities for Success: Providing avenues for children to succeed can foster a sense of accomplishment and pride. This could be through participating in sports, music, or other activities.
9. Show Affection: Showing signs of love and affection can help children to feel secure and confident. This could be through hugs, kisses, compliments, and spending quality time together.
These are just a few tips for helping children develop high self-esteem. Building self-esteem takes time and patience, but it’s an important part of helping children grow into healthy and successful adults.
