Dr Rathnamala M. As an astute student of medicine, she completed her MBBS from Karnataka Medical College, Hubli, Karnataka University, Dharwad in March 1980, completed her MD in OBG from Karnataka Medical College in 1983 with flying colours winning 5 gold medals during UG and 1 gold medal during PG, which speak volumes about your scholarship.
Dr Rathnamala M Desai served as a Lecturer in the Department of OBG, KMC, Hubli for 17 years and as an Assistant Professor for 5 years. The Honorary Consultant of Hubli Cooperative Hospital from 1984-2002, Vivekanand General Hospital and Manvi General Hospital from 2002-2007. I joined SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad in May 2004 as an Associate Professor of OBG. Later promoted as Professor & HOD of the Department and currently serving as a Principal / Dean of SDM College of Medical Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
In a fitting tribute to your excellent academic endeavours, you are rightly chosen as an examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate courses for many universities all over India. You have presented many papers at various national and international forums, which speak volumes about your prudence and solicitude for society. In your scholarship, compassion, pragmatism and administrative capabilities are entwined inseparably and in abundance. You have taken social service as a duty and not charity. You have worked for the community with selfless devotion. You have been unanimously elected as the National President of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) from 2021-2023 and also a President of FPAI, Dharwad Branch. Successfully completed the research workshop held in Geneva in October 2016 as a final part of the training in Sexual and Reproductive Health Research. You were appointed as a “Country Coordinator” of mentor/coach for India to the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research (GFMER), Switzerland.
She has been accoladed many awards for academic achievements, to name a few, the Vaidya Jeeva Ratna Award by the JSS Institute of Economic Research, Vidyagiri, Dharwad. Lifetime Achievement Award by KSOGA State on recognition of outstanding service towards Womanhood and Medical Education
