‘Socialist’, ‘Secular’ missing from Preamble in Class 10 textbook in Telangana -Education News
Two words of the Preamble — socialist and secular — have been omitted from the cover page of the Class 10 social science text books printed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Telangana (SCERT).
The Telangana State United Teacher’s Federation (TSUTF) has called it “a big mistake” and demanded action against the wrong publication.
The two words were originally not part of the Preamble and were added to it in the 42nd Amendment in December 1976.
Chava Ravi, the General Secretary of TSUTF, said the publication of the old Preamble by the SCERT at a “time when there is a worldwide discussion that there is a threat to secularism in the country gives rise to many doubts”. The group has demanded an inquiry and strict action against those responsible for the error. It has also demanded that the Telangana government reprint the text books with the correct Preamble.
Meanwhile, SCERT said the two words were not included due to an “oversight” and issued an order to all the District Educational Officers (DEO) in the state to download an image of the amended Preamble and have it pasted on the cover page of the textbooks carrying the wrong Preamble.
“Due to oversight, the image of the original Preamble was downloaded at the time of redesigning instead of the amended one on the cover page of the class 10 social studies textbook,” said the SCERT.
The DEOs have been asked to instruct all the headmasters/principals of high schools under all managements to ensure that the image of the correct Preamble is pasted immediately on the textbooks supplied to the schools. The SCERT also demanded the officers to submit a compliance report.
The SCERT’s “oversight” comes amid the controversy surrounding the NCERT’s syllabus rationalisation exercise which led to the deletion of references to Mahatma Gandhi, Mughal history, Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and the periodic table, among others.
