Reopening of schools in India has been allowed from October 15 under the Unlock 5.0 Guidelines by the Ministry of Home Affairs. MHA, however, has left the decision to reopen schools with the State Governments, based on their assessment of the situation in the area. Many states, including Karnataka, Delhi, West Bengal, Maharashtra, etc. have decided to keep the schools closed instead.
Many State Governments, subsequent to the release of Unlock 5.0 Guidelines, have decided to keep the schools closed till October 31. These include the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Delhi. Uttarakhand is expected to announce the decision within this week.
Of these, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh Government have only kept the schools closed till October 15. Reopening dates, as per the official notice, would be shared by October 15. States of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu had retracted their previous orders to reopen schools and have decided to keep them closed instead. The decision was taken after assessing the situation and feedback from parents.
As for the states that had reopened the schools from September 21, would continue to permit students 9 to 12 to attend school. This, however, does not mean regular classes. Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Meghalaya, etc. have permitted the reopening of schools but students are only to attend for guidance.
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, MoHFW has further clarified that the attendance is not mandatory and strictly based on consent from parents. Furthermore, in the detailed Unlock 5.0 Guidelines, it is clearly mentioned that the schools cannot allow more than 200 people at the premises. Detailed SOPs and guidelines for reopening schools have also been released, which are to be followed to the letter.
