A team of agro-scientists from LPU’s School of Agriculture, specifically the Department of Plant Pathology, has recently identified a new fungal disease affecting the Karanja plant. This fungal disease, known as ‘pestalotiopsismacadamiae,’ has been causing severe damage to the Karanja trees, also scientifically referred to as ‘pongamia pinnata.’ In July 2022, a village called Hardasspur, situated near the university and adopted by LPU, witnessed a widespread outbreak of leaf spot disease in the Karanja trees. Recognising the urgency of the situation, LPU’s agro-scientists swiftly embarked on a mission to identify the root cause of the damage and save this valuable plant species. Their efforts were fruitful as they successfully identified the new fungal disease responsible for the outbreak. This groundbreaking discovery has been published in the renowned journal ‘New Disease Reports’ in June 2023, shedding light on the emerging threat to the Karanja plant.
