Assam reconsiders reopening of schools
GUWAHATI: Closure of schools in north and west Indian states due to a rise in Covid-19 cases has driven the Assam government to review its plan to reopen primary schools in the state from December 1st.
Top officials in the state education department said the state was seriously reviewing the impact of Covid-19 in the state’s schools, where numerous positive cases have been detected since the formal reopening of educational institutions on November 2.
The principal secretary of the education department, B Kalyan Chakravarthy has said “We are prepared to reopen primary schools. But we are carefully watching the situation after Gujarat, Haryana, Mumbai reversed their decision on reopening of schools. The situation is being reviewed in case of Assam and we will stay very cautious,”
While the state education department is not revealing the number of positive cases detected among students and school staff, sources in the education department said a decision will be taken on reopening of primary schools after assessing the Covid infection in the districts on Monday.
