Paradigm Shift In School Principals’ Role In Post-Corona Era

The destiny of India is being shaped in the classrooms,” was the observation made by the National Education Commission of India (Kothari Commission) way back in 1966. The commission, which was examining all aspects of education of the country, laid maximum expectations on the schools as the school classrooms engage the children in their impressionable age to bring out their innate potentials; and it is the school principal, as the head of the school, who shoulders the responsibility to make it happen.

To achieve this goal, a school principal masters the arts and crafts of school administration, builds up his or her team, designs school curriculum, chooses appropriate methodology, adopts necessary technology and above all, orients and aligns the students. The principal’s job has been to make a delicate balance of several such components on daily as well as the long term basis. But the COVID19 Pandemic has posed a new challenge for the schools now. From the end of March 2020 the school community found themselves in a state that the staff and students are not physically available with them due to lock down.

A couple of months have passed by now, as this article is being written, and no one still knows as to when the students would come to the school physically and how the post-Corona schools shall operate. Meanwhile, some of the private schools were conducting the online and digital classes, assigning homework and even conducting tests for few hours a day depending upon the grades of the students.

Simultaneously, they are conducting yoga, physical exercises, art and craft activities to keep children fruitfully occupied. We are aware that the UNESCO, in its Shanghai Meet in 2012, has called for enhancement of green and digital global economy through digital skill development of the students across the globe. The UNESCO desires that the schools should go green by resorting to digital learning.

There is no doubt that the future world is going to be a digital world. It is not only for the lockdown period, in general, the school should make the students the members of the ‘Smart World’. Governments and the school community must transform themself into digital education mode without which our next generation may find it difficult to make their living. The BGS World Schools, Chickballapur has adopted the online teaching technology to a great extent for the benefitof the students.
