Post Covid, Public Education Systems Must Use Technology To Ensure Equal Access To Learning And Administrative Efficiency

‘If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow’. – John Dewey

I believe that pedagogical standards are in need of constant recalibration. Even in educational institutions like ours with decades of experience this new phase of lockdown is certainly deflating the effectiveness of existing policies and instructional efforts.Presently we are  fast adapting to alternative pedagogy to engage students remotely. But, the speed at which the transition from conventional teaching to online instruction was expected to happen was unprecedented and staggering.

The classroom will continue to undergo significant changes. It is necessary for individual instructors to decide on a minimal set of essential learning outcomes with maximum virtual outreach. While we are involved in the urgency of adapting and modifying schooling it is essential that a child belonging to a marginalised section of society is also kept in mind for whom these suggestions might not work. This marks a digital exclusion and after the lockdown this has to be addressed by the government and the private institutions.

What is clear is that major changes in the way we teach students are being triggered by online learning and the new technologies that increase flexibility in, and access to education. This is motivating our teachers and admin staff to rethink pedagogy and teaching methods.  A knowledge based society has its unique demands. This means helping students to manage knowledge – how to find, analyse, evaluate, and apply knowledge as it constantly shifts and grows. The second factor is the increased emphasis on applying knowledge to meet the demands of 21st century society, using skills such as critical thinking, independent learning, use of relevant information technology, software, and data within a discipline. The development of such skills requires active learning in rich and complex environments, with plenty of opportunities to develop, apply, assess and practice such skills. Thirdly, it means educating students with the skills to manage their own learning throughout life, so they can continue to learn even within lockdown conditions if the situation so demands.

Our schools can focus on building comprehensive educational management systems that can help enhance administrative efficiency by creating strong channels of communication and data collection mechanisms. By integrating these systems with existing programs and structures, through effective monitoring, corrective action can be taken quickly. Let’s work towards protecting ‘the spring’ of our children’s lives.
