COVID-19’s Staggering Impact on Global Education
While COVID-19 has initiated a domino effect of challenges across various sectors, from health, economy, to education, there is a silver lining to the unknown we are dealing with.
The rules of classroom teaching have evolved, as the education community has collectively adopted online learning methods, and teachers are creatively making online classes more engaging.
This is not the end of the traditional classroom, but the beginning of a new era of blended learning where education technologies that enable remote learning will continue to co-exist much after this pandemic.
In spite of these challenging circumstances, as educators, teachers are offered a unique learning opportunity to upgrade their digital instructional tools and teaching methods.
Pre-COVID, an approach for blended learning and digital instruction would have been radical for experienced and newly-initiated teachers.
But now, our teachers across the nation have embraced online classroom learning and have begun humanizing the learning process for students.
While integrating technology into the classroom is not a seamless process, the usage of new resources online from EDTech platforms, videos, digital blackboards, and virtual science labs have been an enriching experience for both teachers and students.
On the other hand, this form of school has dynamically changed how students learn, interact, and participate in their education process.
Students’ access to content is immediate and instills a higher depth of knowledge through creative learning mediums and examples.
Indeed there are many advantages from the impact of COVID-19 on education, but it is a temporary band-aid solution as the virtual realm cannot replicate that of a typical classroom setting.
Patchy internet access, lack of computers in a household, poor ICT skills; there could be an endless list of issues arising from mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on education, and implementing new ideas.
However, I believe that learning should not stop for any student as it could set them back academically by several months.
This is a golden opportunity for initiating students to a virtual learning experience.
Whether it is teachers who have to manage multiple roles to teach and manage their household, or parents who have to proactively participate in their child’s learning process on top of their remote work responsibilities, it is not easy for any teacher, parent or a child in this new learning environment.
We must work together collaboratively to ensure that our children who are also the nation’s future continue to receive meaningful education even amidst a pandemic.
