NCERT director says there is nothing wrong in ‘Rationalization of syllabus’- Education News
There is nothing wrong with the “rationalization of syllabus” but there is a problem with the thought process of people, said Dinesh Prasad Saklani, director of the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT).
The council got flak for deleting portions of social sciences and history from class VI to XII textbooks to reduce the burden on students in the post-covid time. On his two-day visit to Odisha, Saklani said, “Rationalization of syllabus is nothing new and NCERT has been doing it for years. A group of experts and a highly professional body has been engaged in the rationalization work. We must not see it in a narrow perspective and create controversy”. There was criticism from different quarters for removing chapters like Gujarat Riots, the Cold War, and Mughal Courts.
Saklani said, the NCERT has made changes in all subjects starting from maths, science, geography, literature, and language. “I don’t know why people are making it an issue for social science and history when we did the changes in all subjects. We know how covid has imposed mental pressure and stress on children. So, the parliamentary committee decided to reduce the syllabus by 30%,” he added. He said, the revision and revamping of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) is going on in full swing and by the next academic session the framework will be ready for Early Childhood Education (ECE) Besides, the stress is on implementation of National Education Policy like mother-tongue as medium of instruction, and vocational and skill-based education.
