Gujarat HC reunites live-in partners, orders cops to get woman’s documents for marriage registration
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court reunited a live-in couple who were forcibly separated by the woman’s father. When the court found that the woman was desirous to marry her live-in partner but her father was not parting with documents showing her age, the judges ordered the police to get the certificates from her father.
If the police cannot obtain certificates, either birth certificate or her school leaving certificate, from the woman’s father, the cops should get them from the concerned authorities. The HC has ordered the authorities to cooperate with the cops in securing the documents as early as possible so that the couple can register for marriage at the earliest. Meanwhile, the woman chose to live with the man’s family.
The case falls under the limits of Khambhat rural police station in Anand district. Before their live-in relationship, the couple had inked an agreement also. But the woman’s father was averse towards their relationship, and on October 2, he separated them. The man and his mother were beaten also.
As the man was not allowed to meet her, he filed a habeas corpus petition in the high court. As soon as the woman got a chance to express herself, she told the court that she wanted to marry her live-in partner and they would straightaway get their marriage registered, but her father would not give her the documents which are required to be placed before the registrar for age proof.
The girl’s father had not turned up despite the court’s notice. The judges ordered the police to obtain the documents from him. In case, they fail to secure the documents, they will have to get them from concerned government offices, the court has ordered.
Since there was an assault on the man and his mother, the court has ordered police protection for the family.
