Candor International School’s Success Story During Lockdown
As the world stays home to protect itself during this pandemic, teachers of Candor International School in Bangalore have readily imbibed their increased societal responsibility to ensure children receive the best possible education in a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment.
They have adapted to the revolutionary experience of online teaching overnight, going beyond content dissemination to augmenting relationships with students, to ensure they receive the human development that is critical at this unprecedented juncture. A few of these heroes are exemplified below:
IBDP History specialist Ms. Priyodarshini Das, the sands of these times have reassured her that technology will never make teachers obsolete.
She made her history lessons interactive by using Padlet for online collaboration, to balance assessing students’ conceptual understanding with rigorous engagement.
Ms. Ridhu believes that in her English classes, reading poetry has carried a renewed vigour.
Everything has seemed possible to these children in the comfort of their rooms. In these tumultuous times, online classes became a platform for her students to value the philosophies taught in literature.
In the Primary School Ms. Vasundhara has collaborated with Tehihi School in New Zealand and her students are working in collaboration with them on Social Sustainability.
They have looked at different perspectives using the virtual platform to the fullest.
Another Primary School teacher Ms. Vaishali was heartened to see her primary school children adapting so well with the changing times.
She has discovered and used different technologies and applications like Padlet, Canva, Wordart, Flipgrid to make lessons more engaging and interesting.
Ms. Shagun, High school Biology teacher also explored various online tools for her biology classes, such as Edpuzzle, Quizzizz to collect the evidence of student learning and to mould her teaching style accordingly, which she says has made her classes more interactive, engaging and interesting.
Ms. Madhusmita balances her English and ESL classes with taking charge of the school’s first yearbook ‘Meraki’, by leveraging technology to bolster remote coordination with her deeply motivated students.
This, she says, allowed the virtually proactive team to complete the yearbook remotely.
Ms. Anvita Gupta, Principal, Candor International School says, “Teaching using different tools on the virtual platform has been very challenging and successful for us.
We designed our plan to cater to the educational, emotional, social and physical needs of the students to the best of our ability.
For educational needs we are completing the planned curriculum. For emotional and social needs, the students are connecting with their teachers, friends, peers on the virtual platform.
Also the Candor Life Skills Program is currently focussed towards keeping the morale high for our students and giving them a compassionate ear.
The kinaesthetic needs are met by our performing Arts teachers, they are sharing their recorded classes and the students are reverting with the recordings of their sessions for feedback.
The success of the virtual program being run at Candor lies in the positive attitude of its teachers and students who have undoubtedly made the most of the situation and have battled with every obstacle with courage and faith that we will overcome it”.
