THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT In 1966 the newly established Bokaro Steel Plant invited the Xavier’s Hazaribagh Association to establish an English medium school to educate the children of its employees up to the Higher Secondary stage. St. Xavier's School, Bokaro Steel City opened on 18 July 1966. St. Xavier’s is a Catholic-Christian Minority school established by the local unit of the Society of Jesus. It is a co-educational day school affiliated with the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The school is open to all, irrespective of caste, creed, economic status, or place of origin, who the school judges will share the values it stands for. In 1996 the ownership and management of the school was transferred from the Xavier's Hazaribag Association to the Hazaribag Jesuits Education Society (HJES), a Society registered under the Societies Registration Act 1886, Reg. No. XXI-192 of 2005-2006 and a Charitable Trust registered under Section 12A of the Income Tax Act 1961, Reg. No. VIII-39/1996-97. HJES is the legal title of that section of the Society of Jesus working in education, mainly in the districts of Hazaribag, Bokaro, Koderma, Chatra, Latehar, Palamau, and Garhwa in the state of Jharkhand. The School Managing Committee consists of members representing the parents/ guardians, BSL, teachers and the management. THE JESUITS The Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious group, was founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. Since its inception, the members of the Society, popularly known as the 'Jesuits', have toiled in the field of education, among other things, and were called 'the Schoolmasters of Europe'. The Jesuits are inspired by a vision of humanity drawn from the life, teachings and personality of Jesus Christ. They manage educational and other service institutions throughout India and the rest of the world. St. Xavier's is one of the 3,900 Jesuit educational institutions in 70 countries around the world. The School is named after St. Francis Xavier, who was one of the companions of Ignatius of Loyola. From the very beginning the labours of the Jesuits among the people of India, Japan, China, Canada, Central and South America were as important as their activity in the Christian countries of Europe. The Jesuits manage St. Xavier’s, Bokaro Steel City in collaboration with the Sisters of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation. The distinctiveness of a Jesuit education stems from its deep-rooted history and a mission grounded in faith and intellectual rigour. Since its beginnings in the 16th century when the first Jesuit institution opened its doors in Messina, Sicily, in 1548 Jesuit education remains committed to academic excellence, service, leadership, and caring for the whole person. Jesuit high schools embody a tradition that has stood the test of time, and have the proven experience of forming ordinary boys and girls into extraordinary men and women. In 2019 Jesuits run 827 schools in 70 countries the world over. About 1600 Jesuits and 49000 collaborators educate about 8.6 lac students in these schools. 374 Jesuit schools in India educate about four lacs students. Besides, the Jesuits run some of the best colleges, management institutes and universities across the globe. Jesuit education is holistic as it seeks the growth and development of the whole person encompassing the cognitive, affective, psychomotor and spiritual domains. The programmes and activities of the school are structured to facilitate the bodily, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being of the students and the development of their social and interpersonal skills. Jesuit education helps students to realize that talents are gifts to be developed, not merely for self-satisfaction or self-gain, but rather for the good of the human community. Students are encouraged to use their gifts in the service of others, out of a love for God. The school strives to form truly integrated persons of deep faith in God, who will be capable of shouldering responsibilities towards their families, neighbours, country, fellow human beings and the environment. AIMS AND POLICIES While St. Xavier's is open to all, its minority status requires certain preferential options. Parents who wish their children to be admitted to the school are expected to have an understanding of, and the ability and willingness to cooperate in, the type of education offered here. The school's goals include the development of the spiritual potential in each individual. This imposes an obligation on the teachers to provide an educational service that depends as much on the quality of their dedication as on their academic competence and qualifications. It is assumed that this can be achieved only through belief in and reliance on divine help. It further imposes on the parents and students, who desire the Xaverian education, an obligation to develop a social conscience. They too should be ready to share the school's commitment to the whole community irrespective of religion, caste, creed and social status, and the school's belief that education is linked to spiritual growth. ADMINISTRATIVE UNITS The administrative offices of the school are housed in the building closest to the main entrance. Five Vice Principals help the Principal in the day-to-day running of the school. They have their individual offices for administering to the needs of the students. They deal directly with teachers and parents concerning the students in their respective sections. The five sections under the Vice Principals are the Plus Two Section (Classes XI and XII), High School (Classes VIII to X), Middle School (Classes IV to VII), Primary School (Prep to III) and Social Service School (Classes Prep to VI). St. Xavier’s Social Service School provides quality education up to Class VI to the children of the neighbourhood, who would otherwise be deprived of it, for financial and other reasons. Each year some of the brightest from Class VI are absorbed into the English medium. They are assisted financially to complete their school education at St. Xavier’s.
