Karnataka hijab row: CM Basavaraj Bommai orders closure of all high schools & colleges for the next three days in the State – Education News

With the hijab row sweeping over one college after the other in Karnataka, CM Basavaraj Bommai has ordered closure of all high schools and colleges for the next three days in the state. The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday said, “We will go by reason, by law, not by passion or emotions.” Students gathered outside the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College today (Tuesday) to protest against Muslim students wearing hijab. The students are demanding equality.

The Karnataka HC has appealed to the students to maintain peace and tranquility so as to not disturb the public. The court said that it has full faith in the wisdom and virtue of the public at large and it hopes the same would be practiced.

On Monday, amidst the escalation row over students wearing hijabs to schools and colleges, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had said that all schools, colleges and students should follow the government circular issued for closure of high schools & colleges on uniform. He also appealed to the students not to get involved in this issue. Since examination is coming up soon, the students should focus on studies and prepare for exam, he said.  The matter is coming up in the Karnataka High Court today.

The Karnataka High Court is hearing the petitions filed by five girls studying in a Government Pre-university College in Udupi, questioning hijab restriction in college.

The issue began in January at a government PU College in Udupi where six girl students who attended classes wearing hijabs were asked to leave the campus. The matter has now spread to different parts of the state, with Hindu youngsters, backed by right-wing outfits, responding by wearing saffron scarves. Students wearing saffron scarves are also being stopped from attending classes.

The row has taken a political turn, as the ruling BJP stood in favour of rules regarding uniform being enforced by educational institutions while the opposition Congress alleged that the hijab controversy is merely a conspiracy to poison the minds of the youth.
