Delhi Govt & SCERT Launch AI Training for School Teachers to Boost Personalised Learning

In a pioneering move to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the school education system, the Delhi government, in collaboration with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), is launching an AI training programme for government school teachers. Set to begin on October 8 and 9, the initiative—titled the AI-Mediated Classroom Project—aims to revolutionise classroom instruction, make assessments more meaningful, and simplify non-teaching tasks.

This special project is part of Delhi’s broader vision of building future-ready classrooms and aligns with national priorities on digital education transformation. It focuses on equipping teachers with AI tools that can significantly enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.

What Is the AI-Mediated Classroom Project?

According to a circular issued by SCERT on Friday, the AI-Mediated Classroom Project is a capacity-building initiative designed to empower teachers with practical skills in AI technologies. Teachers will learn to use AI tools not only for personalised instruction and smart assessments but also to reduce time spent on routine, non-academic responsibilities such as:

  • Creating PowerPoint presentations
  • Editing visuals
  • Generating creative ideas for cultural and extracurricular activities

An SCERT official highlighted that these repetitive administrative tasks consume considerable teacher time.

“With AI assisting in these areas, teachers can devote more time to interacting with students and enhancing the quality of classroom learning,” the official said.

Programme Implementation: Two-Phase Rollout

The training programme will be rolled out in two strategic phases:

Phase 1: Training the Trainers

  • 100 Computer Science teachers from 50 selected Delhi government schools will undergo a two-day intensive training programme on October 8 and 9.
  • These teachers will act as master trainers in their respective schools, ensuring that the knowledge and tools gained are shared with the broader teaching staff.

“Once trained, these 100 teachers will serve as master trainers and guide others on effectively using AI tools in their teaching practices,” the official added.

Phase 2: Subject-Wise School-Level Training

  • The second phase will focus on subject-specific training for teachers who teach Classes 6 and 9 in core subjects:

    • Mathematics
    • Science
    • English
    • Hindi
    • Social Science
  • Each of the 50 selected schools will nominate 15 teachers (three from each subject) to participate in this phase.

This two-tiered structure ensures a scalable model of implementation where the impact multiplies organically through trained master trainers.

AI Tools to Be Introduced

The programme is designed not just as a one-off training, but as a platform for continuous learning and innovation in classrooms. The SCERT will introduce a range of easy-to-use AI tools, including:

  • Napkin – A generative AI tool that creates visuals from text, making lesson illustrations and cultural activity planning more efficient.
  • Gamma – A tool that helps teachers generate PowerPoint presentations instantly, saving hours of manual work.

These tools are aimed at reducing the digital workload on teachers and allowing them to focus on student interaction and engagement.

Follow-up and Feedback

The SCERT also announced plans to monitor the effectiveness of the initiative through regular follow-ups and feedback collection.

“We are not only launching this initiative but will also conduct follow-up sessions and gather feedback from teachers to assess how well they are able to use these tools,” an SCERT official explained.

This feedback loop will ensure the programme remains dynamic and responsive to teachers' needs.

Scope and Reach of the Project

This initiative is particularly significant given the scale of Delhi’s government education system:

  • 1,075 government schools
  • 16,633 teachers
  • Over 8.24 lakh students

While the initial phase covers 50 government schools and 100 Computer Science teachers, the intention is clear: build capacity at the grassroots level and create a network of tech-savvy educators who can lead the digital transformation in public education.

Aligning with the Future of Education

The SCERT emphasised that the project is a direct response to the changing landscape of education, where digital fluency and AI literacy are becoming essential for both teachers and students.

“This initiative aims to empower teachers to adopt innovative pedagogical methods, enhance classroom engagement, and improve learning outcomes through AI-based practices,” said a representative from the department.

It reflects a growing shift towards technology-enhanced learning, where AI is not just a buzzword, but a practical classroom tool.

Final Thoughts

The AI-Mediated Classroom Project by the Delhi government and SCERT marks a significant step in reimagining how teaching and learning can evolve with the help of AI. It not only prepares teachers to use cutting-edge tools but also aligns with a larger vision of equity, quality, and future-readiness in education.

If successful, this initiative could become a model for other states to emulate, potentially transforming how educators across India approach both teaching and administrative responsibilities.

As Delhi gears up for this tech-driven change in classrooms, the hope is that such initiatives will bridge the digital divide, inspire creativity in education, and equip both teachers and students for the challenges of tomorrow.
