The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur has officially welcomed the inaugural batch for its MBA in Business Analytics (MBA BA) program, alongside its flagship MBA program, for the academic years 2025-2027. The latest admission cycle witnessed a notable increase in applicants with engineering backgrounds, alongside a significant influx of candidates with prior work experience — a trend reflecting the rising demand for technical expertise and practical knowledge in management education.
Rising Preference for Engineering Background
This year, IIM Sambalpur admitted a total of 363 students across both its MBA and MBA Business Analytics programs. Of these, 186 students — approximately 51.24 percent — hold engineering degrees, marking a 5 percent rise compared to the number of non-engineer entrants. This inclination towards technical qualifications is particularly evident in the newly launched MBA Business Analytics program, where 61.70 percent of students come from an engineering background.
Meanwhile, the flagship MBA program shows a near-balanced mix, with 49.68 percent engineers and 50.32 percent non-engineers. This balance reflects the institute’s commitment to maintaining diversity while catering to the increasing demand for technically skilled managers.
Among the students admitted, three have been identified as having physical and mobility challenges, underscoring IIM Sambalpur’s inclusive admission approach.
Work Experience: A Key Strength Across Programs

In the flagship MBA program, 72 percent of students have relevant work experience, while in the MBA Business Analytics program, 100 percent of the students bring at least one year of industry exposure.
Breaking down the work experience further in the MBA program:

- 6 percent have more than three years.
For the MBA Business Analytics cohort, the distribution is:
- 49 percent with one to two years,

- 15 percent with three to four years of experience.
This level of industry exposure is expected to enrich classroom discussions and project work, offering real-world insights and practical application of analytical tools.

Within the flagship MBA program, the gender split is 38 percent women and 62 percent men. The MBA Business Analytics cohort is predominantly male, with 95 percent men and 5 percent women.
