Uttar Pradesh Revolutionizes Urban Education with 2,700 Smart Classrooms: Over 1,780 Already in Action

The Uttar Pradesh government is spearheading a transformative initiative to digitize education in urban government schools by establishing over 2,700 smart classrooms across the state. This ambitious plan aims to enhance the quality of teaching and accessibility for students, particularly those from economically weaker sections. As of mid-2025, approximately 1,780 smart classrooms are already operational, signaling a significant stride toward modernizing learning environments in the state.

Smart Classrooms Boost Enrollment and Attendance in Urban Schools

This large-scale deployment of technology-enabled classrooms is part of Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to revolutionize urban education. The Urban Development Department is leading this initiative, focusing on creating an interactive and tech-savvy environment in government schools to engage students better.

According to Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, the introduction of smart classrooms has brought about a noticeable increase in both student enrollment and attendance. “We are taking urban education to a new dimension. These smart classrooms are not just connecting students with technology but also preparing them for the future,” Abhijat stated.

The incorporation of digital tools in classrooms helps bridge the gap between students from low-income families and the rapidly evolving demands of modern education. This move promises to democratize learning and equip children with skills relevant to the digital age.

Breakdown of Smart Classroom Development under Various Schemes

The development of these classrooms is being implemented through multiple state initiatives, each contributing significantly to the overall number:

  • Smart City Mission: The most significant contributor, with 1,183 smart classrooms planned under this scheme, backed by a substantial budget allocation of Rs 160.83 crore. Out of these, 1,088 classrooms are fully functional and serving students.

  • Kayakalp Initiative: This program has delivered 190 smart classrooms to date, with an investment of Rs 57.66 crore. The Kayakalp initiative is further funded with an additional Rs 4.25 crore to enhance classroom development efforts.

  • Aspirational Cities Initiative: A total of 913 classrooms have been sanctioned under this scheme for Rs 29.43 crore. Currently, 408 classrooms are operational, while construction continues on the remaining 505.

  • Other Schemes: The government has also approved 398 smart classrooms under various other programs. This includes 25 classrooms under the CM Abhyudaya Composite School Scheme and 13 classrooms under the Vaishvik Nagaroday Yojana.

This multi-pronged approach ensures exhaustive coverage and integration of innovative technology across different urban educational programs in Uttar Pradesh.

Impact on Students and Education Quality

The deployment of smart classrooms in government schools is not merely a technological upgrade; it represents a strategic effort to uplift educational standards for urban children who previously had limited exposure to digital learning resources.

The technology in these classrooms typically includes smart boards, internet-enabled devices, multimedia content, and interactive learning modules that make lessons more engaging and understandable. This shift is crucial for building digital literacy from a young age and encouraging active participation in learning.

Moreover, smart classrooms contribute to fostering an inclusive environment by enabling students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to compete on an equal footing with their peers from private schools, where digital facilities are often a given.

The Road Ahead: Expanding Access to Quality Education

With 1,780 classrooms already operational, Uttar Pradesh is pushing to complete the remaining smart classrooms swiftly to maintain momentum in urban education reform. The government’s vision is clear: to ensure every child in the state has access to quality, technology-driven education regardless of their economic circumstances.

Officials emphasize that continuous investment and expansion of digital infrastructure in schools are vital to meeting the evolving needs of students and preparing them for future academic and career challenges.

Conclusion: Uttar Pradesh Sets an Example in Digital Education

Uttar Pradesh’s push to set up over 2,700 smart classrooms marks a significant step toward bridging educational disparities in urban areas. By combining various state initiatives and substantial investments, the government is creating a modern, inclusive, and forward-looking learning ecosystem.

As these classrooms become fully functional, students in Uttar Pradesh’s government schools will have improved opportunities to thrive academically and develop skills essential for the 21st century. This initiative serves as a model for other states seeking to integrate technology into education and improve learning outcomes for all students.
