The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a warning to medical colleges nationwide regarding their accommodation policies for postgraduate students. According to Regulation 5.6 of the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulation (PGMER), 2023, colleges are required to provide suitable residential facilities to postgraduate students, but staying in hostels is not mandatory. The warning comes after complaints from students about exorbitant hostel fees and colleges compelling them to stay on-campus. The NMC has directed colleges to strictly adhere to regulations, threatening penalties such as fines, seat reductions, or suspension of admission privileges for non-compliance. While colleges must offer suitable residential facilities to PG students, the NMC emphasized that students cannot be compelled to reside in the hostels. According to Regulation 5.6 of the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulation (PGMER), 2023, colleges are mandated to provide appropriate residential accommodation to postgraduate students, but staying in the hostel is not compulsory.
