The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 20 universities as "fake" and unauthorized to grant degrees. These institutions have been offering degrees in violation of the UGC Act, and degrees obtained from them will not be recognized for higher education or employment purposes. Delhi has the highest number of such institutions, with eight universities falling under this category. The list also includes universities from Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Puducherry. The UGC Secretary, Manish Joshi, emphasized that these institutions lack the authority to confer valid degrees, and students should be cautious while seeking admissions to avoid such fake universities.
