Maharashtra has announced that it will provide free higher education for transgender individuals in public universities and affiliated colleges. The State’s Higher and Technical Education Minister, Chandrakant Patil, made this announcement following a meeting with university vice-chancellors to discuss the implementation of the new National Education Policy. The proposal, which involves universities covering the tuition fees for transgender students, was unanimously accepted during the meeting. This initiative is viewed as a crucial step towards promoting inclusivity on higher education campuses in Maharashtra. The state also plans to formulate a comprehensive policy addressing the broader inclusion of transgender individuals in higher education, with a focus on identifying and addressing the challenges they face.
