The heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu has led to the closure of schools and colleges in Tirunelveli district on December 20th, with exams being postponed. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for several districts, including TenskasiThoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari. Between December 18 and 19, Tamil Nadu experienced isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, causing flooding and claiming at least three lives. Approximately 500 rail passengers were stranded due to flooded stations. In response to the crisis, Chief Minister M K Stalin has requested Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to deploy more helicopters urgently for rescue and relief efforts. In a letter dated December 19, Chief Minister Stalin highlighted the unprecedented rainfall in southern districts, affecting around 40 lakh people in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.
